Indigenous Peoples’ Day
October 14, 2024
Whereas, the Town of St. Ignatius recognizes that the Indigenous Peoples of the lands that would later become known as the Americas have occupied these lands since time immemorial and that St. Ignatius is built upon the homelands and villages of the Indigenous Peoples of this region; and
Whereas, the Town of St. Ignatius values the many contributions made to our community through Indigenous Peoples’ knowledge, labor, technology, science, philosophy, arts, and the deep cultural contributions that have substantially shaped the character of our town; and
Whereas, the Town of St. Ignatius is committed to promoting the well-being and growth of St. Ignatius’s Indigenous community; and
Whereas, Indigenous Peoples’ Day was first proposed in 1977 by a delegation of Native Nations to the United Nations-sponsored International Conference on Discrimination Against Indigenous Populations in the Americas; and
Whereas, the Town of St. Ignatius recognizes the importance of reflecting upon the ongoing struggles of Indigenous Peoples and the need to celebrate their culture and heritage;
Now, Therefore, I, Daren M Incashola, Mayor of the Town of St. Ignatius, do hereby proclaim this October 14, 2024, and the second Tuesday of each October as Indigenous Peoples’ Day in the Town of St. Ignatius and encourage all residents to observe this day with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Town of St. Ignatius to be affixed this 11th day of October, 2024.
