Welcome to the Town of St. Ignatius St. Ignatius… A Great Place to Live!
In the Town of St. Ignatius, we are defined less by boundaries on a map than by the sense of shared values our residents hold dear. Small town values, guided growth, preservation of historical, cultural, and natural heritage are just a few of the core principles that makes the Town of St. Ignatius a wonderful place to call home.
Rich in history and native culture St.Ignatius- snyél̓mn in Salish is located on the Flathead Indian Reservation, approximately 25 miles South of Flathead Lake. Named for, and the site of the St.Ignatius Mission, established by Belgian Jesuit Catholic Missionary Fr. Pierre-Jean De Smet. The town of St. Ignatius was established circa 1854 and predates Montana's statehood, in 1919 most of the town secummed to a forest fire leaving only a bank, store and hotel. The historic Catholic Church west of town was also spared and the community rebuilt including a hospital.
Affectionately referred to as “Mission” by locals, St.Ignatius is town of 842, per the 2010 census.
